Salah satu penampakan tertua Perawan Maria terjadi di Meksiko pada tahun 1531.
Juan Diego, seorang pria pribumi tua berusia 57 tahun yang telah bertobat dan beralih ke iman Katolik, sedang dalam perjalanan menuju Misa hariannya ketika melewati bukit Tepeyac, di barat laut Meksiko.
Tertarik oleh suara burung bernyanyi, ia memanjat bukit dan melihat seorang wanita muda dalam gaun panjang yang bersinar. Batu-batu di sekelilingnya berbinar, dan Juan Diego melihat pelangi memenuhi langit.
Wanita muda,yang menyatakan kepadanya bahwa dia adalah Perawan Maria, memerintahkan Juan Diego untuk meminta Uskup untuk membangun sebuah kapel di tempat itu. Juan Diego melaporkan pertemuannya dua kali kepada Uskup tetapi ia tidak dipercayai.
Pada tanggal 12 Desember, Maria memberinya tanda yang dengannya kemudian meyakinkan Uskup dan Imam lainnya: jubah Juan Diego secara ajaib tercetak dengan gambaran Maria.
Tanpa ragu lagi, mereka memulai pembangunan tempat kudus, sebuah gereja yang segera menarik para peziarah hingga saat ini.
Hingga sekarang, gambar ajaib yang muncul di jubah Juan Diego masih sejelas seperti pada saat pertama kali muncul, dan kain biasa yang sudah berumur beberapa abad itu masih dalam kondisi baik. Analisa ilmiah yang dilakukan tanpa hasil yang jelas hanya semakin memperdalam misterinya.
Pada 14 November 1921, seorang pekerja pabrik menaruh bom dan meledakkan altar Gereja dimana disimpan jubah tersebut. Ledakan menghancurkan lantai altar dari marmer, kaca-kaca gereja, rumah-rumah sekitar, melengkungkan salib tembaga di altar, tetapi kain jubah Juan Diego bergambar Maria tersebut tidak mengalami kerusakan.
Sejak 1993, kain tersebut kemudian dilindungi,disimpan dalam kotak kaca anti peluru.
Dengan lebih dari lima belas juta pengunjung tiap tahun, Gereja Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe di bukit Tepeyac menjadi salah satu tempat ziarah terkenal di dunia dan “Maria dari Guadalupe” diakui menjadi pelindung Meksiko dan Amerika Latin.

“Ketahuilah, dan taruhlah di dalam hatimu, putra kecilku, yang paling kusayangi, bahwa Akulah Santa Perawan Maria Selamanya yang sempurna, dan Aku memiliki hak untuk Menjadi Ibu Allah yang benar, Pemberi Kehidupan, Pencipta orang-orang, Pemilik apa yang dekat dan jauh, Tuhan Langit dan Bumi”
“Karena sebenarnya aku merasa terhormat untuk menjadi Ibunda yang berbelas kasih kepada kalian semua, kamu dan semua orang yang tinggal bersama di tanah ini, dan semua orang dari leluhur yang berbeda, mereka yang mencintai aku, mereka yang menangis kepadaku, mereka yang mencari aku, mereka yang menghormati aku dengan menempatkan kepercayaan mereka dalam perantaraanku.
Karena aku akan selalu mendengar tangisan mereka, dukacita mereka, untuk membersihkan, menyembuhkan semua penderitaan mereka, permasalahan mereka, penderitaan mereka”
“Dengar, taruhlah didalam hatimu, yang paling kecil dari putra-putraku :
Jangan biarkan apapun menakutkan atau membuatmu sedih
Jangan biarkan hatimu diganggu
Jangan takut akan penyakit atau penderitaan
Bukankah aku ada disini, yang adalah Ibumu?
Bukankah kamu ada dalam perlindunganku?
Bukankah aku adalah kesehatanmu?
Tidakkah kamu gembira ada di dalam lipatan jubahku, digenggam aman didalam tanganku?
Apakah kamu memerlukan sesuatu yang lain lagi?
Jangan biarkan apapun mencemaskanmu atau mengganggumu”

Remembering the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
First Apparition: Saturday, December 9, 1531
Juan Diego was on his way to the church in Mexico – Tlatilolco, near the hill called Tepeyac, when he heard someone singing like the song of many precious birds
Then, he heard someone calling him, *“Juanito, Dearest Juan Diego”.
She told him: “Know, know for sure, my dearest and youngest son, that I am the perfect ever virgin holy Mary, Mother of the One Great God of truth who gives us life…I want very much that they build my sacred little house here…”
Second Apparition: end of day, Saturday, December 9, 1531
Juan Diego begs our Lady to send someone more esteemed than him to deliver the message.
Our Lady told him: “Listen, my youngest and dearest son, know for sure that I have no lack of servants or messengers to whom I can give the task of carrying my breath, my word…; but it is very necessary that you, personally, go and plead, that my wish, my will, become a reality…”

Remember, O most gracious Virgin of Guadalupe, that in your heavenly apparitions on the mount of Tepeyac, you promised to show your compassion and pity towards all who, loving and trusting you, seek your help and call upon you in their necessities and afflictions.
You promised to hear our supplications, to dry our tears, and to give us consolation and relief.
Never has it been known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence, we fly to you, O Mary, ever-Virgin Mother of the true God!
Though grieving under the weight of our sins, we come to prostrate ourselves before you. We fully trust that, standing beneath your shadow and protection, nothing will trouble or afflict us, nor do we need to fear illness or misfortune, or any other sorrow.
O Virgin of Guadalupe, you want to remain with us through your admirable Image, you who are our Mother, our health, and our life. Placing ourselves beneath your maternal gaze, and having recourse to you in all our necessities, we need do nothing more.
O Holy Mother of God, despise not our petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer us. Amen
